Colour a line and copy it in any format
Select text, then pick a colour, a gradient or a format. Paste codes or MiniMessage to read them.
Turn on JavaScript to use the text maker. The codes above work without it.
Write it
Select text first, or pick a style and then type. Ctrl + B, I and U work too.
See it and copy it
In chat with the game's shadow
EssentialsX and most chat plugins read &#rrggbb; Spigot's own code reads &x&r&r&g&g&b&b.
For server.properties, resource packs and anywhere else that reads the section sign.
For Paper plugins that read MiniMessage, like MiniMOTD, and Velocity. Gradients stay one tag.
JSON text, as /tellraw, /title and signs made with commands take it.
No hex colours on Bedrock: each shows as the nearest of its colours.
Typing § and where codes work
The section sign isn't on most keyboards, and the game doesn't read it everywhere.
Type the section sign
- WindowsHold Alt and type 0167 on the number pad, or 21.
- MacOption + 6 on a US keyboard, or Option + 0, 0, a, 7 with Unicode Hex Input.
- LinuxCompose, s, o; or Ctrl + Shift + U, then a7 and Enter.
- PhonesOn an iPhone, hold & on the symbols keyboard. On Gboard it's under ?123, then =\<; on a Samsung, hold S.
- Or copy it
Where the codes work
- Java: files, not chatserver.properties (the MOTD), resource packs, language files and world names. Typing § in Java chat disconnects you, so plugins read & instead.
- Java commands take JSON text
/tellraw,/titleand signs set by command use JSON, which the /tellraw tab above writes. - Bedrock: most textChat, signs, books and quills, anvil names,
/titleand/scoreboard, but not the newest menus, which show the codes as they are. - Hex colours need 1.16 or laterOn Java servers and clients from 1.16, through plugins, MiniMessage or JSON. Bedrock has none.
Where the codes go, in Playkeeper
Add plugins that read & codes from a server's Plugins tab, then edit their messages in the Files tab, right in the browser. For the server list, there's the MOTD generator.

Questions
What are the Minecraft color codes?
Sixteen colours, from §0 black to §f white, and six formats: §l bold, §o italic, §n underline, §m strikethrough, §k obfuscated and §r reset. Bedrock adds its own colours, such as §g minecoin gold.
What's the difference between § and &?
The game reads the section sign, §. Plugins read & in their configs and chat, because § is hard to type and Java chat refuses it, and turn it into § for the game.
How do I get the § symbol?
On Windows, hold Alt and type 0167 on the number pad. On a Mac, press Option + 6. On a phone it's behind & or S on the symbols keyboard. Or copy it from this page.
Can I use hex colours in Minecraft?
On Java 1.16 or later, yes: through plugins that read &#rrggbb, MiniMessage tags like <#ff8800>, or JSON text. Bedrock only has its own colour codes.
Why does my bold text stop after a colour?
On Java, a colour code turns the formats off. Put the colour first and the format after it, as in §6§l, and repeat the format after each new colour.
How do I make a gradient?
Select the text in the text maker, pick two colours under Gradient and add it. Copy the MiniMessage for Paper plugins, or the & codes with a colour for each letter for other plugins.
Do color codes work on Bedrock?
In chat, signs, books and item names, yes, with a few colours of its own. Underline and strikethrough don't exist there, and the newest Ore UI menus show codes as plain text.
