Minecraft server icon maker
A server icon is a 64 × 64 PNG named server-icon.png, in the server's folder next to server.properties. Make one from letters or a picture, see it in the server list, and download it.

Four steps
Keep the name server-icon.png
All in lower case. The server looks for exactly that name.
Put it in the server's folder
Next to server.properties, not in the world or plugins folder.
Restart the server
It reads the icon only when it starts.
Refresh the server list
Friends see the new icon the next time their list pings the server.
If it doesn't show
- It must be 64 × 64 pixelsAny other size is refused: the server logs that it couldn't load the icon, and friends see none.
- It must be a real PNGA JPEG renamed to .png won't load. The icon made here is always a PNG.
- Check the name for a second .pngWindows hides file extensions, so server-icon.png can really be server-icon.png.png.
- On a network, the proxy decidesVelocity and BungeeCord show their own icon, from the proxy's folder.
In Playkeeper, it's in Settings
Open a server's Settings, then Server list, and upload any picture. Playkeeper crops it to 64 × 64 and shows it next to the message friends see. No files, no folders.

Questions
What size is a Minecraft server icon?
64 × 64 pixels, saved as a PNG. Minecraft shows it smaller or larger with the game's GUI scale, but the file itself must be exactly 64 × 64.
What do I name the server icon file?
server-icon.png, all in lower case, in the same folder as server.properties. The server finds it there when it starts.
Why isn't my server icon showing?
It's usually the size (it must be exactly 64 × 64), a picture that isn't really a PNG, a second .png that Windows hides, or a server that hasn't restarted since. On a network, the proxy's own icon shows instead.
Can a server icon be animated?
No. The server list shows one still PNG. Some plugins pick a different icon each time the list refreshes, which is the closest you can get.
Do Bedrock servers have an icon?
No. Bedrock's server list shows no icon for servers added by address, and a Bedrock Dedicated Server has no setting for one.
Is my picture uploaded anywhere?
No. The icon is made on this page, in your browser, and the picture never leaves your computer.
How do I change the server icon in Playkeeper?
Open the server's Settings, then Server list, and choose Upload picture. Playkeeper crops it to a square, makes it 64 × 64 and shows the preview. Friends see it after the next restart.
