How to make a Cobblemon server

Updated 28 Sep 2026 · 3 min read

The short answer

Start from the Cobblemon Official Modpack: version 1.8.1 runs Fabric Loader 0.19.5 on Minecraft 1.21.1 with Java 21. Only 32 of its 73 mods go on the server; the other 41 are for players. Give it 4 GB for a few friends and 6 GB for up to ten.

The pack also comes in a NeoForge edition. The server and its players need the same edition and version.

2Only 32 of its mods run on the server

The pack marks each mod for players, the server or both, and marks these correctly:

  • 41 are for players only, like Sodium, Iris, Mod Menu and Entity Model Features, which change what they see. The server leaves them out.
  • 32 run on the server: Cobblemon itself, Fabric API, Lithium, Krypton and FerriteCore, which make the server lighter, JEI and EMI, Xaero's maps and more.

Cobblemon's own jar is 137 MB, most of the 183 MB the server downloads.

3The one-click way

Playkeeper runs your server on a VPS you rent. Install it with one command:

curl -fsSL https://playkeeper.io/install | sudo sh
  1. Search New server › A modpack

It's the official pack, version 1.8.1. Your dashboard shows what it installs before anything happens.

  2. Create and start it

Playkeeper downloads the 32 server mods, checks each against Modrinth's hash and leaves the 41 for players out.

  3. Send friends the pack

Share with friends on the Mods tab gives them the pack and their launcher's steps.

New server, starting from a modpack: the most downloaded packs, each with its loader, Minecraft version, mods and the memory it needs.

4By hand, from the pack

The itzg Docker image, which Playkeeper runs servers in too, and mrpack-install both build the server from the pack and leave the players' mods out.

# Cobblemon 1.8.1 on Java 21: 4 GB in all, 3 GB of it Java's heap
docker run -d --name cobblemon-fabric -p 25565:25565 \
  --memory 4G --memory-swap 4G \
  -e EULA=TRUE -e MEMORY=3G -e USE_AIKAR_FLAGS=TRUE \
  -e TYPE=MODRINTH -e MODRINTH_MODPACK=cobblemon-fabric -e MODRINTH_VERSION=1.8.1 \
  -v cobblemon-fabric-data:/data itzg/minecraft-server:java21

Open TCP 25565 in your provider's firewall.

5Looking for a server to join instead?

Cobblemon's team keeps a list of public servers on cobblemon.com. A server of your own is for playing with the friends you choose, on your rules.

6Friends join with the same pack

Players install the Cobblemon Official Modpack 1.8.1 in the Modrinth App or Prism Launcher, then join your server's address. The pack gives them the 32 mods the server runs and the 41 for players.

In Playkeeper, Share with friends on the Mods tab makes a page with the pack and their launcher's steps.

The page friends open: the server's versions, the pack file to download and their launcher's steps.

Questions

How much RAM does a Cobblemon server need?

4 GB for a few friends, what Playkeeper suggests for its 32 server mods, and 6 GB for up to ten.

Is Cobblemon Fabric or NeoForge?

Both. The official pack's main edition is Fabric, version 1.8.1 on Minecraft 1.21.1; there's a NeoForge edition too. Playkeeper runs either.

Do players need the same mods?

They need the same pack version. It gives them the 32 mods the server runs, at the same versions, and 41 more for players.

Can I play Cobblemon with friends without a server?

Yes, in a world opened to LAN or through a tunnel, but only while your game runs. A server stays on when you log off.
